The Maryland Department of Health is an agency of the government of Maryland responsible for public health issues. The Department is headed by a Secretary who is a member of the Executive Council/Cabinet of the Governor of Maryland. Currently the secretary is Laura Herrera Scott. [1]

To the Maryland Department of Health, the Council makes recommendations on chronic disease prevention, health, and wellness. Of the Council's thirty-three members, twenty seven are appointed by the Secretary of Health to four-year terms.

Each local health department administers and enforces State, county and municipal health laws, regulations, and programs. Public health programs tailored to community needs provide preventive care; immunizations; health education; drug and alcohol abuse counseling; and rabies and communicable disease prevention.
