For Stern Drive The serial number is located on the upper driveshaft housing. For Transom Plate The serial number is inside the boat or on the upper swivel pin.

All Mercury outboard engines either have an identification tag or an instruction plate that contains the serial number. The ID tag is located on either side of the swivel bracket (or transom bracket), and the instruction plate is located between the thumb screws above the steering tube.
