President Donald Trump signed an order Monday imposing global tariffs of 25% on all steel and aluminum imports, likely pleasing domestic steelmakers but hurting allies like Canada and Mexico.

Trump signed proclamations raising the U.S. tariff rate on aluminum to 25% from his previous 10% rate and eliminating country exceptions and quota deals. The measures will take effect on March 4.

The president said he planned sweeping tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports on Monday and would take other action to even out tariff rates with the rest of the world later this week.
