A tsunami warning has been issued for Hawaii along with tsunami watches for the U.S. West Coast following an 8.7 earthquake off the Russian coast. Meteorologist Paul Heggen has more.

A massive magnitude 8.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Russia Tuesday, sparking tsunami warnings in Alaska and Hawaii and alerts for other areas of the West Coast. The earthquake occurred about 85 miles off the east coast of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula with a depth of nearly 12 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

A major magnitude 8.7 earthquake struck early Wednesday in far eastern Russia. Tsunami alerts have been issued in parts of Alaska, Hawaii, Japan and throughout the Pacific. The quake struck near the Kamchatka Peninsula city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a city of 181,000 people.
