By Ira Dugal, Jayshree P Upadhyay and Scott Murdoch MUMBAI (Reuters) -Indian regulators barred U.S. securities trading company Jane Street from the local market and seized $567 million of its funds, saying an investigation found it manipulated stock indices through positions taken in derivatives.

India’s regulator has temporarily barred Jane Street from accessing the local securities market, dealing a severe hit to the US firm that allegedly made $4.3 billion in trading gains in the South Asian nation in more than two years.

The lawsuit alleged that the traders had stolen a “ highly valuable, unique, and proprietary ” trading strategy, which was quickly revealed to revolve around India’s booming options market. Jane Street and Millennium settled the lawsuit in December, but judging from SEBI’s report it has cast a long (and expensive) shadow.
