Helmeted police in riot gear turned out on Friday evening in a tense confrontation with protesters in downtown Los Angeles, after a day of federal immigration raids in which dozens of people across the city were reported to be taken into custody.

Federal immigration authorities arrested 44 people Friday across Los Angeles, prompting clashes outside at least one location as law enforcement threw flash bangs to try to disperse a crowd that had gathered to protest the detentions.

Police in Livonia, Michigan, say an officer shot a man who they say was acting erratically and pointed a gun at the officer Friday afternoon.

An armed man was shot by a police officer at a Livonia business on Friday, officials said. It happened around 2:10 p.m. inside a cellphone repair shop near Middlebelt and 5 Mile roads.

Grant Hardin, 56, walked out of the North Central Unit on May 25 after authorities say he disguised himself in a "makeshift" law enforcement uniform.

Grant Hardin, who served in the top police job in Gateway, Arkansas, was found in Izard County, about a mile and a half from the facility he escaped on May 25, the Arkansas Department of Corrections said. His identity was confirmed by fingerprint analysis.

Police confirmed that the only person who fired a weapon during the chase was an officer, "whose gunfire unintentionally struck Officer Rivera."

Chicago police Officer Krystal Rivera was mistakenly shot by a fellow cop during a confrontation with an armed suspect that took her life Thursday, police have announced. In a statement late Friday, the department released a statement saying an investigation had reached the conclusion that Rivera was struck by friendly fire.
