You can’t watch the trailer for Pedro Pascal’s new movie Freaky Tales and not think of the 1990s. Mainly that’s because the film is set right on the cusp of the decade, 1987, but also the idea of a violent, weird, sprawling single California city almost-anthology brings to mind one of the best films of the decade: Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction.

On Tuesday, Lionsgate released the bloody, action-packed trailer for the upcoming film which stars Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn, Normani, Tom Hanks, and the late Angus Cloud. It’s set to release on April 4.

The film is a send-up of just about everything that shaped ’80s pop culture, from hip-hop and sci-fi blockbusters to the decade’s biggest sports stars and kung fu movies. The film first premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival,
