The world's largest toymaker, Lego, has told the Financial Times that it intends to build its own videogames in-house from now on. The company has heavily invested in digital infrastructure in recent years, tripling the number of software engineers it employs since 2022, and aims to move away from outsourcing the brand to third party studios.

Lego has a long history in the video games sector between licensed titles that feature digital brick versions of iconic movie characters and physical sets like the new Mario Kart one. But after decades of third-party studios making games with the Lego name on them,

LEGO has announced it's setting up its own video game development studio and will be bringing the production of LEGO titles in-house. Previously, the company has employed external teams like TT Games and Studio Gobo to make its brick-based games, but now the process will be handled internally.

Lego is working to build up its in-house game development, the company's boss has revealed. Speaking to The Financial Times, Lego boss Niels Christiansen said the company was increasing its focus on video game experiences created by its own teams, following years of partnerships with outside companies.
