Geologists say Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano shot lava as high as 1,000 feet into the air during its most recent eruptive episode.

Kilauea began continuously releasing lava from its summit caldera inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on Wednesday morning after a weeklong pause, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The molten rock was contained within the park and wasn't threatening residential areas.

A volcanic eruption in southwest Iceland on Tuesday forced the evacuation of the town of Grindavík and the nearby Blue Lagoon tourist site, as lava and smoke poured from a newly opened fissure.

Lava began bubbling out of Hawaii’s most active volcano once again on Tuesday as Kilauea’s sporadic eruption resumed.

Tuesday's eruption also caused the evacuation of the Blue Lagoon spa, one of the country's top tourist destinations.

Scientists at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said “episode 16” of the ongoing eruption began at 10:57 p.m. on Monday, with lava overflowing from the north vent.

A fishing village in southwest Iceland was evacuated Tuesday after lava began spewing from a volcanic eruption, the eighth to hit the region since the end of 2023.
