Brutal cold will open the door for a winter storm to take a somewhat unusual track through the South and create treacherous conditions.

This system will start initially as snowfall Friday afternoon and evening; however, freezing rain and sleet will mix in with the snow Friday night due to warmer air in the upper levels of the atmosphere.

The storm will reach a new gear on Sunday, with snow, sleet and freezing rain intensifying from Kansas to Virginia.
