A Sheriff’s Office in southern Wisconsin is warning county residents about an increase in SIM Swap cases, where a scammer gains access to a victim’s cell phone number which allows access to bank accounts and other personal information.

The Dane County Sheriff's Office is alerting residents to a rise in SIM Swap cases. This scam involves transferring a victim's phone number to the scammer's device.

MADISON, Wis. -- The Dane County Sheriff's Office on Thursday reported an uptick in SIM swap cases in the area. SIM swapping, sometimes called SIM jacking, is a type of crime where hackers transfer a person's phone number to a scammer's phone number. That allows the scammer to access bank accounts and other apps.

In one scam, a woman was convinced to withdraw $35,000, and in another, a man was convinced to withdraw $88,000.

The Dane County Sheriff's Office is warning against scam calls after multiple incidences in the month of January.
