A coalition of state attorneys general filed a lawsuit Monday challenging the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s demand for states to turn over personal data — including names, birthdates, and home addresses — for people who are enrolled in a federally funded food assistance program.

Twenty states are suing the Trump administration, alleging that the Department of Agriculture is improperly attempting to gather sensitive personal information of low-income families across the country who use food stamps.
