For some, the new year begins as soon as the clock strikes midnight on Dec. 31. Throughout East and Southeast Asian countries and the respective diaspora, however, the new year starts with the first new moon.

The Year of the Snake is upon us as communities across the Bay Area celebrate Lunar New Year, Chinese New Year and Tet. Here’s just a sampling of ways to join in the celebrations.

Park admission will be required to celebrate the Year of the Snake with The Mouse at Disney’s annual event. It will include Mulan’s Lunar New Year Procession, Asian food specials and Disney characters dressed in special costumes, When: 8 a.m. Feb.1-2

Downtown Akron Partnership is hosting the fourth annual Lunar New Year celebration on Saturday, Feb. 15 from 3:30 to 8 p.m. at the Akron Civic Theatre.

Village at Pacific Highlands Ranch On Saturday, Feb. 2 the Village at Pacific Highlands Ranch will present a traditional lion dance for its annual Lunar New Year celebration, starting at 10:30

Mobius will also host a "Year of the Snake" headband craft activity, and Panda Express will also host a coloring activity.

The Galleria, Hatfield, is kicking off the Year of the Wood Snake with a spectacular celebration on Saturday, January 25 from 2-5pm.
