The welfare assistance program Hope Florida, spearheaded by Florida first lady Casey DeSantis, is under intense scrutiny following questions from lawmakers over the handling of a $10 million settlement.

The unusual injection of cash was part of an undisclosed settlement agreement involving Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration.

Gov. Ron DeSantis denied Thursday that a $10 million payment to the Hope Florida Foundation that was part of an agreement with health care giant Centene over Medicaid payments was illegal and called it a “cherry on top” instead.
