LOS ANGELES -- Marvel’s first family has finally found box office gold. “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” the first film about the superheroes made under the guidance of Kevin Feige and the Walt Disney Co., earned $118 million in its first weekend in 4,125 North American theaters, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Disney and Marvel's "Fantastic Four: First Steps" opened to an estimated $118 million at the domestic box office. Internationally, the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe film snared an estimated $100 million, bringing its global weekend haul to $218 million.

As of mid-Friday, estimates suggest an opening day haul of around $56 million, including the $24 million in previews. This marks a remarkable achievement, as it puts the film on par with Superman’s domestic opening day of $56.5 million.
